As part of my studio art minor in art and technology, I took 3D animation 1 and 2. Both courses were built around modeling, texturing, rigging, animating, lighting, and rendering using Maya. The final deliverable for both was an animated short that as gradually worked on over the course of the semester.
The House - SP2019
The goal of this course was to gain a comprehensive overview of computer animation in Maya through the creation of a personal animated short. The prompt was to create a house, a character that occupies it, and animate a short vignette. Over the course of the semester, the house was sculpted, modeled, and textured, as was the raccoon and other scenic elements. The raccoon sculpt and texture map create an adorable, yet believable, little creature that the silent short centers around. Sound effects were added and everything was put together in Adobe Premiere.
Lost at Sea - AU2020
The final project for Ohio State’s Computer Animation 2 course was to create an animated short. The prompt was incredibly open ended. My collaborator Matt Hall and I came up with the concept of a shipwrecked man lost at sea. We developed that into a storyboard sequence that showcased his various attempts of escaping his situation before realizing he was doomed. My focus was on the character and camera animations as well as the sound design. I also did the initial model of the character and crates and the textures that accompanied them.
In addition to creating our final short. We had four smaller assignments throughout the semester. Each one was based around a sort of ridiculous adjective noun combo. Our task was to craft an idea for a short animation that fulfilled that phrase and create + animate everything necessary to execute it.
Assignment 1: The Lonely Chair
My interpretation of this idea was to showcase a chair that others seemed determined to avoid at all costs.
Assignment 2: The Heroic Lamp
Frightened by the storm outside, our lampy little friend finally musters the courage and motivation to turn his bulb on after a particularly frightening bolt of lightening.
Assignment 3: The Pillow in Love
Our friend the pillow feels some kind of romantic way towards the lamp on the bed side table.
Assignment 4: The Sneaky Bicycle
One of two bicycles sitting on a hill decides to be a little mischievous and malicious and kicks the others kickstand up, sending him on a little ride.
